A root canal treatment is a procedure used to save a tooth that has become infected or badly damaged. Instead of removing the tooth, we carefully clean out the infection from inside and restore it so you can keep your natural tooth.
When might you need a root canal?
You may need a root canal if:
You have persistent toothache or pain when biting
Your tooth is sensitive to hot or cold, especially if it lingers
There is swelling or infection in the gum near the tooth
The tooth has been badly decayed, cracked, or injured
You’ve had repeated dental work on the same tooth
Sometimes, there may be no pain at all, and the problem is found during a routine check-up or X-ray.
What does the treatment involve?
Root canal treatment is usually completed over 1–2 visits:
Examination & diagnosis
We assess the tooth and take X-rays to confirm the infection.
Cleaning the root canals
The tooth is numbed, and the infected tissue inside is carefully removed.
Disinfection & filling
The inside of the tooth is cleaned, shaped, and sealed to prevent further infection.
Restoration
In most cases, the tooth will need a filling or crown to strengthen and protect it long-term.
Will it hurt?
No — the procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should not feel pain during treatment.
Afterwards, you may experience some mild discomfort or tenderness, which usually settles within a few days.
What to expect after treatment
Your tooth may feel sensitive for a few days
Avoid chewing on that side until fully restored
Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
Follow any advice given by your dentist
Most people return to normal activities the same day.
Aftercare & long-term care
To keep your treated tooth healthy:
Maintain good oral hygiene (brushing twice daily, flossing)
Attend regular check-ups and hygiene visits
Have a crown placed if recommended, as this helps prevent the tooth from breaking
